Pastor's Message

Throughout human history, dreams have been understood as not simply biological or psychological events, but as a means of spiritual communication. The Bible is full of stories in which God speaks to people in their dreams, beginning with Jacob’s dream in Genesis of a ladder connecting heaven and earth and going right through the New Testament. The Gospel of Matthew, in particular, has a number of stories emphasizing dreams as a way that God communicates God’s will to people and/or tells them important information about coming events. Several of these are particularly important stories in the events surrounding Jesus’ birth.

As you may know, Advent is the beginning of the new church year, and with that comes a change in our Sunday Scripture lessons. The lectionary, which is an ecumenical guide that recommends Scripture lessons for churches throughout the year, starts over with Advent, and it is Matthew’s gospel that provides most of the gospel passages that are suggested for this coming year. Given that, and given Matthew’s emphasis on the importance and power of dreams, our Advent theme for this year will be “Like Those Who Dream.” That particular phrase comes from Psalm 126:1, which is written from the perspective of Israelites returning to their land after the Babylonian Exile:

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,

we were like those who dream.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter

 and our tongue with shouts of joy;

then it was said among the nations,

“The Lord has done great things for them.”

The Lord has done great things for us,

 and we rejoiced.

After literal generations of waiting and hoping for God to deliver them from exile, they are finally able to return home and be restored to the life that God had always promised them.

In a way, that is a foreshadowing of what and why we celebrate Advent. We often talk about Advent as a season of waiting; wait for Christmas, of course, but more specifically and profoundly, waiting for Jesus’ Second Coming, waiting for his return to fully redeem humanity and creation and bring to conclusion the process of that redemption that was inaugurated at his resurrection from the dead. But the word “Advent” literally means “coming” or “arriving.” So any “advent,” and particularly what Christians celebrate, is not about something that will begin sometime in the indeterminate future, for which we must stand and wait; it is about sometime that is already in motion, already beginning to happen. Which is why, when we light the Advent wreath this Sunday, the Scripture that we read says “the people who walk in darkness have seen a great light,” not “…will see a great light.” It’s already happening!

That’s also the sense of God’s activity in the various stories about dreams that we will be considering in Advent; such dreams are not warnings about something that will happen, but revelations that something is already happening, and inviting human beings to be aware and respond accordingly. So, over the course of Advent, we will consider what that means for us if we are to be “like those who dream.” I’m excited to be celebrating Advent with you, and look forward to being with you in worship on Sunday!

Peace and blessings,

—Pastor JC

Watch for Email Scammers

Alert! Emails from scammers have been circulating through church member emails, as well as Woods staff. Most times, these emails look very legitimate.

Woods will never email you asking for gift cards, Amazon orders, or money. All emails from Woods Church end in “.org” (not “.com”).

Please use caution and always call the church for verification at 410.647.2550.

Medical Professional Volunteers Needed

Woods is looking for members who are either physicians, physician's assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, anyone in the medical field, who would be willing to note their presence in a particular worship service or church event (musical production, etc.)—in the event there is a medical emergency—and would be able to help assist until the EMTs arrive.

A notebook and sign will be placed in the Narthex just outside the Sanctuary (to be monitored by the head usher) for the above person(s) to note their name, cell phone number, and presence in the service or particular event being held in the Sanctuary.
